Illegal Migration Is NOT Compassion

Lovely eight-year-old Neftaly had no idea she’d been delivered into the hands of her rapist by what American politicians call a more compassionate immigration policy. It wouldn’t have mattered much to her. Yet, Neftaly’s story is not unusual in Mexico, so it should matter a lot to Americans who support such policy. She was orphaned at age five, then various distant relatives grudgingly agreed to take her in - as long as she washed the dishes. She became more accustomed to fear and rejection than love. When an uncle she’d never met showed her a bedroom and told her to undress for bed, she tried once again to muster more hope than fear. Sadly, it would be many years after that night before she looked at the world with trust and hope again.

Presidential Warmongers and Whoremongers

It is oft said, "Good men don't start fights or run from them." Plenty of Americans exemplify such cowboy virtue in their personal lives, but American presidents are now establishing a tradition of abandoning such wisdom for the reprehensible extremes of bullying or cowardice. George Bush was barely engaged in a crucial defining struggle in Afghanistan, when he felt compelled to turn his attention to opening a 2nd front in Iraq, for reasons that were (at best) poorly defined. Barack Obama felt compelled to publically announce an arbitrary date for an Afghan withdrawl (what men who care about victory call retreat). This made both pacifist supporters and Taliban enemies feel much better.

She just announced on CNN that she endorses Quaker Mitt because she is following Martin Luther King's advice to judge these candidates by the content of their character not the color of their skin.

Basic Elements Of The Upcoming Election

The Elements Movie Trilogy, directed by Deepa Mehta, is a powerful meditation on the oppression of women in India. Fire, Earth and Water are the titles of the three films. Though long recognized for their artistic value, these works now deserve a fresh look for their relevance to the upcoming election.

Fire is sparked by rubbing two people together - literally. A Hindu man who can't conceive children decides he shouldn't make love to his wife, because this would just be for desire and that's not spiritual. He also insists that his frustrated wife help him "test" his immunity to desire. The desperate housewife notices that everyone else is busy fulfilling their longings (however inappropriate), so why should she deprive herself of an opportunity to have hot sex with her daughter-in-law. Two wrongs don't make a right, but apparently five do - not the best moral argument ever made.
