The Conjuring is a witch's brew of all the standard suspense film gimmicks. Yet, it may be the best of this hokey genre. There is much directorial restraint keeping the screams and apparitions fleeting and bearable. There is an earnestness about the supernatural without insisting that viewers embrace the predominantly-silly ghostbusting profession. Alfred Hitchcock might even be impressed with this creepy, gripping and well-crafted movie.

Charlize Theron Clings To Young Adulthood
Young adult is a popular literary genre, a confusing life stage, and the title of a fascinating movie. Charlize Theron's character clings to young adulthood. As an author, she struggles to crank out another sequel for the young adult series that gave her success. As a woman, she refuses to believe married-with-child ex-boyfriend Patrick Wilson is no longer an option.
Comedy and tragedy ensue. Returning to her Minnesota hometown, Charlize buddies up with a genitally-mutilated, masculinity-challenged guy, whom she cruelly mocks as "low-hanging fruit." She thinks they're opposites. The reality that they're equally stuck in the past reveals itself touchingly and hilariously.
